SIC 12 - Coal Mining
SIC 12 - COAL MINING
View full description Collapse full description
This major group includes establishments primarily engaged in producing bituminous coal, anthracite, and lignite. Included are mining operations and preparation plants (also known as cleaning plants and washeries), whether or not such plants are operated in conjunction with mine sites.
The production of coal fuel briquettes and packaged fuel is classified in Manufacturing, Industry 2999.
Establishments primarily engaged in the production of gas and hydrocarbon liquids from coal at the mine site are classified in Major Group 13.

Industry trends
The coal mining industry (NAICS 12) is currently experiencing both challenges and transformations due to shifting energy paradigms and environmental regulations. A significant qualitative trend is the industry's move towards cleaner and more efficient technologies. Companies are investing in carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems and improving mining technologies to reduce environmental impact. This transition is driven by stringent government policies and an increasing societal demand for sustainable practices.
Another notable trend is the diversification of energy portfolios by major coal companies. There is a growing inclination to invest in renewable energy projects and other natural resources, aiming to mitigate risks associated with coal’s fluctuating market and regulatory pressures. In regions like Appalachia, there is a focus on land reclamation projects, transforming old mining sites into wind farms or tourist attractions, which showcases a shift towards environmental rehabilitation and alternative revenue streams.
Looking forward, the near future of coal mining will likely see a decline in traditional coal demand, especially as global markets continue to sway towards renewable energy sources. However, coal may find a consistent, albeit diminished, role in energy production in developing economies where immediate transitions to renewable energy resources might not be feasible due to infrastructural or financial constraints. Overall, the coal mining industry will have to continually adapt to maintain relevancy amidst accelerating global energy transformations.
- Investment in renewable energy and grid modernization continues to accelerate.
- Regulatory changes and sustainability initiatives are shaping long-term growth.
- Operational efficiency and technology adoption are key focus areas.
